Class 11 Economics Chapter 3: Partition Values
Short notes, key concepts, quick revision and practice MCQs with answers
Partition values divide ordered data into equal parts. They are more useful than the average when the data contains extreme values (outliers) and are widely used to study income and inequality.
Key concepts: Partition Values
- Partition values
- Values that divide data into equal parts: Quartiles (4 parts), Deciles (10 parts), Percentiles (100 parts). Also called fractiles.
- Need
- Outliers distort the mean, so partition values give a better picture of position and spread.
- Key relation
- Q2 = D5 = P50 = Median.
- Quartiles
- Q1, Q2, Q3: three values dividing data into four equal parts. Q1 = size of (n+1)/4 th item; Q3 = size of 3(n+1)/4 th item (individual series).
- Deciles and percentiles
- D1 to D9 divide data into ten parts; P1 to P99 into hundred parts.
- Uses in economics
- Comparing income groups, studying inequality and the poverty line, benchmarking test scores and household income.
Quick revision: important points
- Arrange data in ascending order before finding any partition value.
- Statistics Day is on 29 June (birthday of P.C. Mahalanobis).
- Median is itself a partition value.
